How To Describe Your Last Job In An Interview For A New Job - Work It Daily

How To Describe Your Last Job In An Interview For A New Job - Work It Daily In any job interview, they’ll want you to tell them about your previous job (or your current job). Part of the reason is to determine your experience level, but as you give the answer, you also reveal a lot about your personality, attitude, and work ethic. Related: How To Answer 5 Tricky Job Interview Questions If you answer questions about your last job well, you can show positive qualities while you keep selling yourself for the job. Here are some ways you could answer three interview questions about your last job: What were your responsibilities in your last job? Your list of responsibilities could be a mile long; but when you answer this question, it’s important that you focus on talking about the ones that relate to this new job as directly as possible. You need to be strategic about what you know will be important to this hiring manager, and talk about what matters to them. For instance, you could choose 3-4 responsibilities to outline and then say, “I believe that this is one of the reasons I’d be a great fit for this job. What I did there is similar to what I’d be doing here, and I was successful there, so I can be successful for you, too.” If there isn’t such a nice, neat correlation, you can point to your transferable skills (as opposed to direct experience). Show how a skill you used in the old job would help you be successful here. Don’t assume they will be able to see itâ€"make sure you connect the dots. What were the major challenges of your last job and how did you handle them? The balancing act in answering this question is making sure you talk about past challenges that used key skills you will need in this new role. For instance, if you were a customer service rep moving to a sales role, you may want to talk about the challenges of relating to customers quickly, and not only saving the relationship from a complaint, but selling a new service to them. You’d want to talk about how you approach those kinds of problems and what resources you use to solve them. Always mention the results of your actions in quantified terms (numbers, dollars, or percentages). For instance, you could mention that you “retained an average of five customers per month,” or you “sold new services worth $17,000.” Including these quantified examples strengthens your authority and credibility with the interviewer. What was your least favorite part of your last job? With any question that asks you to speak about something negative, it’s important to be very diplomatic and speak about it in a positive way (or at least a neutral way). To them, a negative answer will say more about your attitude than the situation you were in. For instance, talking about an unreasonable workload (even if it really was) will make it seem like you don’t want to work hard. In addition to keeping it positive, be strategic. Try to tell them something that won’t matter at all for this new job. For instance, if your old job required a lot of travel but this one doesn’t, that’s an easy, innocuous thing to point out: “I wasn’t fond of the travel schedule that kept me away for a week at a time. I’m looking forward to being in my own bed more often.” Always be strategic in your interview answers and sell yourself for the job. 4 Steps to Avoid Misunderstandings During the Staffing Process

4 Steps to Avoid Misunderstandings During the Staffing ProcessTheres an inherent difficulty in the relationship between staffing professionals and their clients. Employers come to you because you are an expert at finding the best employees. Youre better equipped to effectively attract and asses talent. But because clients dont have the knowledge of how staffing works, they dont always share your perspective on the process. They ask questions. They push back against your suggestions. They urge you to speed up the process. This can be frustrating. But as a staffing professional, its equally important for you to understand where they are coming from.By making the effort to get on the same page as your clients, you both see and appreciate one anothers motives and priorities. Not only does this make the staffing process easier, but also it helps develop mora trusting relationships that enable you to retain clients. Here are four steps to help you and your clients see eye-to-eye on the staff ing processWalk them through step by stepWhile most employers are well-versed in the hiring process, few have experienced the staffing process firsthand. Many assume the approach is the same as their own internal talent acquisition process. The differences are small, but they can lead to misunderstandings with your clients. For instance, clients arent introduced to candidates until you present your top picks. They simply dont know all the time and effort you spend evaluating talent to bring them the best options. When you provide them with only a list, they naturally wonder how you made ansicht decisions. Its up to you to show clients how you approach talentassessment so they understand the value of the candidates you send them.Click To TweetMeeting with clients and clearly outlining your process ensures they understand your diligence and attention to detail. It is extremely helpful to use real-life examples of ways you discovered exceptional and even unexpected top candidates in the past. Begin by explaining where you search. If you use less-conventional sources, like social media, show your client what you look at in potential candidates profiles. Be clear about when and how you reach out to candidates. Demonstrate how you verify their information after reviewing resumes. Seeing each step in action shows how dedicated you are and gives clients mora confidence in the quality of candidates you pass along. And remember, if your process ever changes, update your clients accordingly.Address their business concernsOne thing many staffing professionals forget is employers turn to them because theres a problem at the organization. Maybe they need a marketing professional because the company needs better brand recognition. Or they could need customer service employees because support calls are taking too long. Youre looking for more than a person to fill a role. Youre looking for a solution.Understanding your clients business concerns enables you to refine job descript ions and evaluation criteria. It also helps you both establish priorities. For instance, there are thousands of qualities and experiences that make a great salesperson. But if you know your client is looking to specifically improve B2B sales with enterprise-sized companies in the southern part of the country, you get a much clearer picture of what type of candidate will help them reach that goal.Qualify and quantify descriptionsIts easy to acquire a list of desired traits and skills from your clients. Issues tend to arise when agreeing on what qualifies as enough. For example, your client might want candidates to have impeccable communication skills. But what exactly does that mean? Do you focus on how they express themselves in a one-way video interview? If the candidate uses flowery language and multi-syllable words are they a better communicator than someone who is clear and concise?A list of job requirements isnt enough. You need an objective way to show clients the quality of c andidates you present. staffingtipsClick To TweetWhen descriptions arent quantified, it leads to clients rejecting all your candidates.Have a conversation about ways you and your client can objectively evaluate candidates. One way to get on the same page is learning details about employees who have been successful in the role. Find out what their educational and professional background was. Get examples of how they exhibited their skills daily. This information will help you develop a rubric both you and your client agree on.Discuss limitationsClients often assume some even insist the perfect candidate exists. Furthermore, they presume that candidate is currently looking for a job. Staffing professionals know this is rarely the case. You can certainly find candidates who check off most of your clients boxes, but every individual is likely to have some flaws.Given the current competition for talent, staffing is even more difficult. From the beginning, you need to discuss how the cu rrent state of the market impacts the staffing process. While you would never present sub-par candidates, your clients need to understand that it might take longer than they thought to find the perfect placement. Providing data about current talent pools helps. Show clients what the average time-to-fill is right now. Create a list of the most in-demand skills so they realize why competition for talent is so high. By having this conversation early, clients understand what obstacles you could face and are less likely to have unrealistic expectations.Make sure your staffing clients have reasonable expectations by explaining the current talent market.Click To Tweet___

Learn How to Write a Truly Great Short Story

Learn How to Write a Truly Great Short StoryLearn How to Write a Truly Great Short StoryTips for writing a great short story are based on the primary elements of fiction, no matter the length, character, plot, or theme. But when writing a story of no mora than 10,000 words, keep in mind that employing these elements will often require an adjusted approach. The challenge for the short story writer lies in developing the major elements of fiction- character, plot, theme, point of view, etc.- in less than 25 typeset pages, as the industry cutoff for the form is considered 7,500 to 10,000 words. To meet this challenge, short-story writers generally follow, consciously or unconsciously, standardized guidelines for success. Use Few Characters and Stick to One Point of View You simply will not have room for more than one or two round characters. Find economical ways to characterize yur protagonist, and describe minor characters briefly. These smaller characters are called ancillary char acters, and only exist to accelerate the plot. For a short story, lengthy descriptions are not needed. Having only one or two protagonists naturally limits your opportunities to switch perspectives. Even if youre tempted to try it, you will have trouble fully realizing, in a balanced way, more than one point of view.? Limit the Story to a Single Time Frame Though some short-story writers do jump around in time, your story has the biggest gunst der stunde of success if you limit the time frame tightly. There are few reasons a short story needs a flashback or flash-forward. Covering years of a characters life in the short-story form is unrealistic, but the form is well suited for highlighting important instances that help shape the characters perspective. By limiting the time period, you allow more focus on the events that are included in the narrative, and time passes naturally to the reader. Edit Ruthlessly As with poetry, the short story requires discipline and editing. Eve ry line should either build character or advance the action. If it doesnt do one of these two things, it has to go. William Faulkner was right to advise writers to kill their darlings. This advice is especially important for short-story writers, as economy is key. For a good example of word selection, read A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by a master of the form, Ernest Hemingway. Not one word exists that doesnt serve the story if any text is taken out, the story would collapse entirely. Follow Conventional Story Structure The standard rules of narrative that applied in our high school literature classes apply to writers as well. Though you may not have room to hit every element of traditional plot structure, know that a story is roughly composed of exposition, conflict, rising action, climax, and denouement. However much you experiment with form, something has to happen in the story- or, at the very least, the reader has to feel as though something has happened. Short stories often cover events that on the surface seem like banal everyday occurrences but conceal deeper emotional meaning. Literary devices like conflict and resolution achieve this effect. Storytelling may seem magical, but the building blocks are actually concrete, and it is simply your flavor that makes your story individual. As with any type of writing, the beginning and the end are the most important parts. Make sure your first and last lines are the strongest in the story- first to grab, and then to anchor. Know When to Break the Rules As with all rules, some are meant to be broken. Alexander Steele points out in his introduction to the Gotham Writers Workshops Fiction Gallery that the short story lends itself to experimentation precisely because it is short structural experiments that couldnt be sustained for 300 pages can work beautifully for 15. Also, the lines between genres- such as those between short stories and the poems- has become blurred, and the combination of genres leads t o new, readable styles within the world of fiction. Keep in mind, however, that telling your story is still the most important thing. If breaking a rule allows you to tell your story more effectively, by all means, break it. Otherwise, think twice, or at least be honest with yourself if the innovation fails. Dont break a rule just to break it. Everything in a short story should have a purpose, including its structure. Following these rules should help you complete your stories successfully. If you find that your story overflows these boundaries no matter what you do, consider expanding it into a novel. The short form is not suited for every story, and you might find that once you start writing, you have more to say than you originally thought- and need the pages to say it. Much more common, however, is a longer work that can be distilled into a single idea.
